Workers Comp "Cost Drivers"

“Why are my company’s rates higher
than my competitor’s rates?”

Good question!

Workers comp rates are affected by a company’s frequency and severity of losses.  Perhaps your competitor has recognized how to drive costs down.  Here are some downward cost drivers:

  1. A strong commitment from owners and upper management to make safety a priority.
  2. Well-established, fully implemented safety procedures and programs.
  3. Excellent hiring practices and employee training.
  4. An aggressive Return-to-Work program.
  5. Proper supervision of workers.
  6. A strong company culture that values employees and treats them with respect.

Though far from an exhaustive list, these drivers are present in virtually all companies with excellent safety records.  In order to drive workers’ comp costs down, a strong “safety culture” must be established.  Modeling these components is a starting point for creating that culture.
