Suppose one of your workers on a job site breaks his leg tripping over a piece of equipment left in the way by a worker from another company. Suppose you slip and fall on a wet floor because someone forgot to post notification that the floor was wet. Suppose the piece of equipment your worker is using malfunctions and causes injury to that worker. Suppose your employees are involved in a motor vehicle accident and the other driver is at fault. These may all be work-related injuries, but who is responsible?
In each case, the cause of injury could be the result of another person's negligence or another company's faulty product. If so, these claims should not be charged to your workers comp policy.
